Tesla Detailing Guide — What Every Tesla Owner Should Know
Tesla paint is notoriously soft. Here's how to properly detail a Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S, or Model X without damaging the finish.

Tesla Paint Is Different
If you own a Tesla, you've probably noticed — the paint is softer than most cars. Tesla's water-based paint system is thinner and more prone to swirl marks, scratches, and chips than traditional automotive paint. This isn't a defect; it's a trade-off Tesla made for their manufacturing process.
What this means for detailing: your Tesla needs more careful handling, better products, and ideally a detailer who understands the nuances.
The Biggest Mistakes Tesla Owners Make
1. Automatic Car Washes
This is the fastest way to destroy Tesla paint. The spinning brushes create hundreds of micro-scratches that compound over time, leaving the paint looking hazy and swirled. Even "touchless" automatic washes use harsh chemicals that strip any protection.
2. Using the Wrong Products
Grocery store car wash soap, dish soap, and cheap spray waxes are too aggressive for Tesla's soft clear coat. They strip protection and can leave chemical stains.
3. Drying with the Wrong Towel
Using a chamois, bath towel, or any rough fabric on wet Tesla paint will create swirl marks immediately. Only high-quality microfiber drying towels should touch the paint.
How We Detail Teslas
At G Mobile Detailing, Teslas are one of our most common vehicles. Here's our approach:
Exterior:
- •pH-balanced car soap — never anything harsh
- •Two-bucket method to prevent cross-contamination
- •Microfiber wash mitts only — no brushes or sponges
- •Proper drying technique with plush microfiber towels
- •Ceramic sealant to protect the soft paint going forward
Interior:
- •Vegan leather cleaning (Tesla doesn't use real leather)
- •Screen cleaning with anti-static solution — no Windex
- •White interior special treatment (Model 3/Y white seats stain easily)
- •Carpet and floor mat shampoo
- •Glass cleaning — Tesla's massive windshield needs streak-free finish
Ceramic Coating for Teslas — Highly Recommended
Given how soft Tesla paint is, ceramic coating is arguably more important for a Tesla than any other car. A ceramic coating:
- •Adds a hard sacrificial layer above the soft clear coat
- •Prevents swirl marks from normal washing
- •Makes the car dramatically easier to keep clean
- •Protects against bird droppings, tree sap, and UV
- •Lasts 1-7 years depending on the package
Our ceramic coating packages for Teslas start at $600 for a 1-year coating. Most Tesla owners opt for the 3-year or 5-year package for long-term protection.
Tesla-Specific Detailing Tips
Model 3/Y White Interior: Use a dedicated interior protectant every 2-3 months. The white vegan leather looks incredible but absorbs dye from jeans and dark clothing.
Glass Roof: Tesla's panoramic glass roof attracts fingerprints and streaks. We clean it inside and out with every detail.
Charging Port Area: This area collects dust and grime. We clean it carefully without getting moisture in the port.
Frunk and Trunk: Both have felt-lined storage areas that trap dirt. We vacuum and detail these areas.
Recommended Detailing Schedule for Teslas
- •Every 2 weeks: Premium Wash (exterior maintenance)
- •Monthly: G Package (interior + exterior refresh)
- •Every 6-12 months: Full Detail (deep restoration)
- •Year 1: Ceramic coating application
